2. Learn the basics
If you haven't picked up a book or checked out a tutorial on HTML, the mark up language of the Web, you may want to do so before you begin the task of designing your own website.
Denise had learned some of the basics while working for a previous employer and though she laid out most of her design in a viewing mode as opposed to building her website out of code from the ground up, she found what she had picked up very helpful in the end.
"At small companies you tend to wear a lot of hats, so when we were very busy I would pitch in and make simple site updates for our clients," Aday said. "I didn't realize I had learned and retained so much of it until I started designing my own site."
