5. Take your time

There's no point in rushing. If you're learning something new, it may take a while. For example, Denise says her own site took weeks to launch because of her decision to go the do-it-yourself route.

"Looking back, this ate up a lot of time. But when you're bootstrapping it, sometimes there's no alternative," she said.

6. Visualize

Besides looking at other sites to get a sense of what she did and didn't like and what seemed to work, Denise was careful also to visualize her own site before even beginning to design it.

"I tried going the template route, which didn't work out. So I mapped out the basic layout on a tablet," she said.

She then mapped out the pages of the site to determine how to provide visitors with all of the relevant information about her business services.
