Bootstrapper Tips
by Shawn Hessinger on November 30, 2007

Tom Pick over at WebMarketCentral mentioned BootStrapMe.com in a discussion of great social sites left off VirtualHosting's top 100 social blogs.
Here's the recap on the Social Media blog.
Wow! I have to admit I've never seen this as a social blog per se, but I do understand the importance of social networking to the bootstrapper.
First watch this video on "The Art of the Social Start."
And here are some thoughts on why bootstrappers need to use social networks more:
1. The media industrial complex is broken. Guy Kawasaki says he'd like to buy a Super Bowl spot someday but will have to settle for bootstrapping right now. Seth Godin argues that even if you could foot the bill to broadcast your message most viewers would probably ignore it.
2. There's no better way to spread your cold. Again Guy Kawasaki explains the problematic notion of assuming your idea will be viral but no other medium offers a better, cheaper opportunity of spreading those that are.
3. Selling is a social game One that Greg Gianforte insists the bootstrapper must be absolutely great at. Gianforte cold called prospective customers from a spare bedroom. You could use Facebook.
4. MySpace is cheaper than office space If you don't absolutely need a bricks and mortar location stick to social networks. They're easier to keep clean and won't charge you rent.
5. The world won't beat a path to your door without bread crumbs to lead the way. Social networking can be a way to let other people know about you and by extension your business. Make the most of it.
