Today, 26 years later, the company has grown to a chain of nine stores throughout Virginia and launched its own online music magazine 9X.
That success may seem remarkable in the face of huge retail conglomerates and big boxes like Wal-Mart and Target, which have also become major players in the record industry.
However, Plan 9 Music currently belongs to a cooperative representing 70 independently owned and operated music retailers across the country, the Coalition of Independent Music Stores.
