When running through branding notions for n10ah, I came across seth Godin's well-known thoughts on branding and the need to market outrageously.
It's important to note though, as many of the more conservative set certainly will, that another important aspect of branding has to do with creating a descriptive name associated with the product.
This really doesn't seem to work out in the case of brand names like Yahoo! and Amazon.com, both of which come from real words but neither can really be associated with the product they represent.
In dreaming up n10ah, I felt I had a name that was both descriptive (check the definition here particularly 2. and 3. and see how this could relate to the sharing of new music between fans and musicians) and unique (because of the unique spelling).
But Seth also says a brand name should work with marketing, as in the case of his milk containers above for the launch of Purple Cow.
Here are some other thoughts on branding, a subject which I've begun to think a lot more about this year.
