Social networks and your bootstrap business (Part 5)

Social networks and your bootstrap business (Part 5)

As a wrap up for our discussion of social networks, the use of a myriad of on line tools to market a product or business can be of immeasurable use to the bootstrapper.

• As marketing expert Charlie Cook explains in comments on an earlier post, social networks are far from being a "magic pill" for marketers and are certainly only one of many possible options for marketing a business
• And as web industry and emarketing guy Leonel More insists in a comment on yet another post the valuations on the big social networks may be overrated and ready for a fall.

But ultimately, a whole slew of social networks like these offer a variety of methods for marketing socially…and very inexpensively.

These social networks offer far more than cheap promotion and marketing forever. They can provide invaluable feedback for your business from customers that will help you separate a good business model from a bad one and ultimately create great products that people really want.

Great Finale to a great Series.

Although I think Social networks can get you started, theonly one I’ve really had success with is Stumbleupon. I think the others are just too geared to News and tech stories.

I find Stumbleupon to bring in a lot of traffic and be stickier, exactly the opposite of how it’s usually presented.

Thanks for the comment, Lou. I think the only thing one can be sure of with social networks is that there is no one size fits all. Social networks have their own personalities and, like real communities, differ greatly in terms of who decides to be members. For that reason, I’ve found that some social networks others swear by don’t do a thing for me and the same goes for those I recommend to others. In the end I think they can be a valuable tool but each entrepreneur must evaluate the benefit for his/herself.
