Unemployment Benefits? One of the Risks of Going it Alone…

National Public Radio had an interesting story yesterday that highlighted the plight of many people involved in entrepreneurship and home-based business. If their business fails, they are just as unemployed as a laid off autoworker. But they are not eligible for unemployment benefits.

Most people believe if they're laid off – downsized or simply out of a job – they will get unemployment insurance benefits. While each state has different guidelines on the amount paid and the length of time people can receive benefits, the federal system, created in 1935, simply does not cover the majority of today's workers.

Top of the list of people not eligible? Non-traditional workers who are out there on their own…

You can listen to the story here.
